Where to Eat and Shop in Montecito

Where to Eat and Shop in Montecito

Whenever I need to slow down, I know exactly where to go: Montecito. Just the drive up Highway 1 puts me in a serene mood, with the Pacific on one side and hills on the other. And then when I get to town, it all feels so charming and pleasant. There's plenty to do here if you like beaches or hiking, but I confess, I mainly go for the food. Here are a few of my favorite restaurants, along with some other places to add to your itinerary.

Field and Fort
Field and Fort is my go-to spot in Summerland. Great coffee, plus fresh salads and satisfying sandwiches. I like to stop in for lunch, then browse the boutique for antiques and decor.

Bettina
This Neapolitan-style pizzeria makes one of my favorite gluten free pizzas ever. Get the pepperoni with chili oil and honey—it's incredible. On a warm, sunny day, there's nothing like pizza and a glass of crisp wine outside on the courtyard.

Stonehouse
My favorite dinner spot is Stonehouse, the restaurant at the San Ysidro Ranch. Their Steak Diane is by far the best steak I've ever had in my life, their wine list is top-tier, and much of the food comes from the on-site gardens (pictured). It's definitely on the more expensive side, but it's a meal you'll remember.

RH Firehouse Grill
A friend told me that the restaurant at RH is surprisingly good. So I ordered the Mulholland Drive salad and guess what, it was amazing.

Godmothers
Godmothers just might be the cutest bookstore in the world. Sometimes I'll take Jupiter there to browse, and after we've chosen our books, we treat ourselves to pastries in the cafe. It's one of the best places to spend a rainy day.

Clark's Oyster Bar
Obviously, they have amazing oysters, so you have to go for that reason alone. But they also have really good grilled cheeses for the kids and yummy shoestring fries. Something for everyone!

Shoppe Amber Interiors
If you're looking to make your home even more beautiful, you have to visit Amber Lewis's store. Everything there is carefully curated but still approachable. I love it.

Spilled Milk
Spilled Milk carries THE cutest toys and children's clothing, a lot of it from Europe and Australia. This pop-up shop just closed in January, but you can still shop online... and I'm hoping they'll open a permanent store in the future.

Architecture
One of my favorite things to do in Montecito is drive around and look at the historic homes and churches. If you're interested in Spanish-style homes, don't miss Casa del Herrero, a Spanish Colonial Revival estate with beautiful gardens. (But FYI, tours aren't open to young children.)
