Jupiter is off to Kindergarten!

Jupiter is off to Kindergarten!

I know kids grow fast, but honestly, you guys… I don't understand how Jupiter is about to start kindergarten. I'm so emotional about it—she's growing up SO fast. At the same time, I'm excited for her to reach this milestone. I know it's going to be a wonderful adventure for her (and for the whole family).

I can't remember the exact details of my own first day of kindergarten, but I do recall feeling very grown-up with my backpack, pencil pouch, and pencils. And still, everything seemed so big. There were new kids to meet, new classroom rules to learn, and (even though I didn't necessarily want to admit it) a lot of nervousness about going to school with the "big kids" in the rest of the school. It took me a little while to adjust, but then I LOVED it.

So that's what I have been telling Jupiter: that kindergarten is really exciting and fun, with lots of opportunities to learn and grow and make new friends. And that also, starting something new can bring up a mix of feelings—which is normal, and I'm here to listen when she wants to talk.

Another thing I'm doing is letting her steer decisions around clothes and school supplies, so she feels like she's in charge. Considering how fast these first five years have gone, it'll be no time at all until she really is. Here are a few of the things we've added to cart before kindergarten begins.

1. This stainless steel lunchbox has five compartments, is plastic-free, and is sturdy enough to last for years.
2. I like to tuck a note into Jupiter's lunchbox. These scratch-off notecards give kids a fun "challenge" (like thanking a friend or teacher) to do during the school day.
3. This backpack comes in three sizes to fit preschoolers through grade schoolers. You can have their initials embroidered, too.
4. Love these insulated water bottles—they come in so many fun colors and designs.
5. This soft, sunshine-y pouch is a super-cute way to organize kids' essentials.
6. This book is great for children who are nervous about starting school. The Pigeon is, too, until he sees that school sounds like a lot of fun.
7. A lot of kids like knowing what to expect from their day. These foam magnets help them create a routine, with activities from brushing teeth to having lunch.
