What Strength Actually Feels Like

What Strength Actually Feels Like

For the past year, I've been thinking about strength and resilience. That's the mood driving the new Being Frenshe scent, Hinoki. I really felt inspired by the feeling we all get when we tap into inner strength, so I wanted to share some thoughts.

It's easy to assume that resilience is about keeping a stiff upper lip and being unaffected. But the strongest people I know are the ones who are open about what they're going through. They're willing to ask for help so they don't have to go it alone. They can acknowledge that things are hard, but maybe they won't always be. Most of the time, they can't see the full path forward, but they keep going anyway. That, to me, is resilience.

Something my therapist once told me has helped me a lot. When you're going through a particularly difficult time, remind yourself that you can get through it. You don't have to know how that will happen, but the power of your thoughts is what helps you persevere. Personally, if I'm struggling, I like to take a walk to clear my head. Usually something I encounter will help me remember that in time, I'm going to be OK.

When things feel heavy, my mind tends to jump straight to, This is it. This is how it's going to feel forever. (That's my anxiety talking.) So I remind myself that whatever is going on, this, too, shall pass. I know that's cheesy, but… it's true! If I feel myself spiraling, I bring myself back to what's actually happening. I will literally look at my surroundings and tell myself, "I'm safe in this exact moment," and that puts me into a better frame of mind. I also remind myself that every day is a brand new day that brings brand new energy, and that helps shift my perspective a little bit. Does it make things perfect? No. Does it help? Yes.

I recognize that not all difficulties are equal. Having a tough day at work isn't the same as losing someone you love, for instance. But no matter the challenge, finding your inner strength starts with reminding yourself that you can get through it—and you will. There's no need to go looking for strength, because it already exists in you.
