How to Make a Grocery Store Cake Look Like it Was Custom-Baked

I love having people over for dinner. What I don’t love is stressing myself out by cooking every single thing from scratch. With two kids running around, the idea of baking a dessert before guests show up is basically a joke—it’s just not happening. Which is why I was thrilled when my friend Roti Brown shared the easiest trick to make a store-bought cake look totally custom.

Roti has this effortless way of making even the most ordinary night feel special. Her tablescapes are gorgeous but never fussy, her food is thoughtful but approachable—you can’t help but want to sit down and linger. When she told me about her cake shortcut, I knew it would be good, but I didn’t expect it to be this easy.

Now when I want dessert to look a little more elevated, I grab a basic vanilla cake with buttercream frosting from the store. (I got this one at Whole Foods.) I slide it off the grocery container and onto a simple serving plate or pedestal stand, then smooth the sides a little so it looks more polished. From there, it’s just about the topping. I slice ripe apricots in half and gently press them into the frosting. Finish with a drizzle of honey that runs down the edges.

The whole thing takes maybe five minutes, but the end result looks like it was created by a baker. I’ve pulled it off a few times now, and every single time, people ask where I got the cake.

I'm telling you now, but whether you tell your guests the secret—that part’s up to you.
