The Case For an Adventure Day

By Ashley French
The Case For an Adventure Day

Spring Break is one of the busiest travel times of the year, but our family typically sits it out. Part of that is because our girls are too young to care about Spring Break, but a lot of it is the logistics. Navigating the airport with car seats and kid carry-ons is never what I'd call fun, but when TSA lines are long and planes are overbooked… thanks, but we'll just stay home for now.

One thing we do instead is have an Adventure Day. The concept is simple: pick somewhere local-ish that's not in your usual rotation, and make a day of it. For us that might mean the zoo, or a beach day. (We live in Malibu, so the ocean is always an easy option.) My favorite Adventure Day is when we drive about an hour up to Montecito to visit a bookstore called Godmothers. It is Jupiter's absolute favorite place, and you can really make a day of it. We go to lunch somewhere we haven't been in a while, we browse every shelf, and we drive home with a bag of books.

What I'm finding is that kids don't need a grand destination to have a good time. Sure, they like the fun of going somewhere exciting and new… but for them, that might just be five or 10 miles from your home. What they need is novelty and a sense of discovery. Getting out of the usual routine, even for just an afternoon, is exciting for them. Even if you've been someplace before, it's likely to feel different (and who knows, maybe even adventurous) to you as a parent when you experience it through your child's eyes.
